Although Paul Mex always strives for maximum recording quality, having a punk sensibility means he doesn't get too hung up on equipment, with the belief that if an idea, content & feel is right, it could possibly be captured on a domestic cassette recorder.

Its no surprise that some of Mex's favourite recordings have an element of 'dirt' in them, which in many ways actually adds to the music; think early Velvet Underground, Stooges, MC5 et al, not to mention countless jazz recordings.

Modern music doesn't escape this notion either, as can be heard on records by The Strokes, Robbie Williams & even Madonna, amongst many others.

Certainly at the moment it appears everybody has gone MP3 crazy, probably due to Apple's phenomenal iPod marketing campaigns. So there is this bizarre situation whereby digital recording quality has advanced drastically within the studio environment, yet many people primarily listen to material in a format that reduces the recordings quality. Just goes to show that it's all really about the content & 'people liking what they like' over any inferior audio fidelity.

At the end of the day tools are only as good as the person using them.

Consequently, partially based on the aforementioned opinions & the fact equipment tends to change at an alarming pace these days, it seems pointless listing a comprehensive inventory of gear used at Mex One, other than to say that all the relevant kit is at hand to produce an inspirational recording!
